1991 Vintage: General Appreciation
Many commentators were completely unimpressed initially with 1991 and still now it is far from universal loved. I see it is a very good vintage especially for the reds. To some degree the 91’s suffered in the shadow of the glorious 1990 vintage. It was a difficult growing season with frost as late as April and a cold snap in May. There was hail in the north striking Gevrey Chambertin in June. The start of July signalled summer and some fine weather which primarily lasted through to the harvest though there were a few downpours.
Red Wines
As ever the most meticulous growers who paid careful attention to sorting the grapes produced some fine reds though there is some variability. The best of the wines are rich and vibrant and in some cases still youthful and drinking beautifully now and perhaps have 5-10 more years of providing considerable pleasure.
White Wines
It is fair to say that 1991 was not kind to the whites. It was a difficult vintage for Chardonnay and it unlikely that any are offering pleasurable drinking today.
