1964 Vintage: General Appreciation
In general 1964 was a successful vintage in Burgundy quite noticeably better for the reds than the whites. Comparisons have been made with both 1949 and 1952 where the wines are classically structured and what we now refer to as old-fashioned. The wines at the time were aromatic, supple and rich and the best have remained fragrant and expressive even now though, they will not improve in any way.
Red Wines
This has been considered an even and consistent vintage for the reds pretty much from the start. The best are richly fruited with layers of long flavours and throughout the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune the wines showed great character.
White Wines
Not the clear cut beauty of the red, the whites are plump, ripe and full but a little lumpy and one-dimensional missing the acidity and minerality. I suspect that virtually none can be providing any real pleasure now though I would be happy to be contradicted.
