By Burgundian standards Dujac is a relatively modern Domaine founded by Jacques Seysses making their debut vintage in 1968. Essentially, the Seysses family purchased 4.5ha of vines from what was Domaine Marcel Graillet in Morey Saint Denis which included plots in top vineyards such as Clos de la Roche (1.95ha), Clos Saint Denis (1.29ha) and Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes (1.15ha).
The Seysses family had made their fortune being owners of a famous biscuit brand in France and they invested in the late Gerard Potel’s Domaine de Pousse d’Or in Volnay, when it was established in 1964. Though Jacques had worked in the family biscuit business and dabbled with banking, his real passion was in wine.
The estate now cover over 15ha having been further augmented in 2005 by purchasing along with others vineyards from Domaine Thomas-Molliard including Romanee Saint Vivant (0.16ha – actually owned by Wilf Jaeger but leased to Dujac), Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts (1.57ha), Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts (0.73ha) and Chambertin (0.29ha).
The Domaine is now principally run by Jacques’ sons Jérémy and Alec along with Jermey’s wife Diana who is a trained oenologist and the winemaker of Dujac. One of the top names in Burgundy, the Dujac wines are highly sought after for good reason as they are fragrant and though richly fruited, they possess great finesse and elegance and are finely balanced. Interestingly, 2013 was one of the smallest recent harvests for Dujac with low yields averaging round 25hl/ha.
