1979 Vintage: General Appreciation
1979 was not universally thought of as a particularly strong vintage but I have had some very good wines from 1979. Cool weather continued throughout the spring delaying flowering and in June hail storms hit the Cote de Nuits especially in Nuits Saint Georges and Chambolle Musigny. It was a pretty healthy harvest and the 79’s suffered somewhat coming off the back of the exceptional 78’s. In general there are some attractive wines and the whites were also very pleasant in general.
Red Wines
Notwithstanding the problems of hail especially in Nuits Saint Georges and Chambolle Musigny there were many attractive Pinots in both the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune.
White Wines
In a similar way to the reds, the whites were immediately attractive and charming but were never really going to make the long haul. Consequently, it is unlikely that any are really drinking enjoyably now.
