2002 Vintage: General Appreciation |
Right from the start it was clear that 2002 in general was an excellent vintage and personally one of my favourites. Both reds and whites in the main are delicious (notwithstanding for the whites some premature oxidation issues) and the 2002’s are amongst the most consistent of top vintages. 2001/02 had been an exceptionally cold winter followed by a mild spring and though late, flowering completed quickly and without problem. The season was ideal with some rain and cooler conditions in September the harvest was essentially completed by the beginning of October in fine conditions. |
Red Wines |
The best of the reds are really stunning and stylish demonstrating individual characteristics of each terroir. They combine rich, concentrated flavours that retain purity and elegance and are amongst the most harmonious and balanced. There is good acidity and these wines should age beautifully. |
White Wines |
A similar story for the whites where there was plenty of ripe, concentrated fruits but mixed with positive acidity which in the best wines has given them good ageing capacity. At the top end, these wines are rich, vigorous and fresh and in some cases they still have plenty of life left in them for enjoyable drinking. |
